EKG For Nurses Sall, Anna $5 quizzes you on parts of the heart, applying EKG electrodes, and administrating of IV's, as well as on the interpretations of EKG tracings. MegaCode (MEGACOD) Hatton, Richard C. $0 is a game or testing program for paramedics, medical students or doctors. In the program, you are presented with treatment alternatives in emergency situations and must select the proper courses of action. This program is not recommended for those without more knowledge than first aid, unless you watch a lot of medical shows on the TV. PC-NurseWorks 2.1E (NURSWRK) NursePerfect Software $10 consists of seven modules that nurses in clinical practice and nursing students will find helpful. The first facilitates speedy and accurate tallying of intake-and-output sheets. Module two makes short work of all sorts of drug dosage calculations: solid and liquid forms, children's dosages using the body surface area method, and individual doses of drugs that are administered in mg/kg/day. Other modules provide more calculations useful to nurses. Sexware Challenge Software Co. $0 Were you one of the 50% that flunked the recent, controversial survey of sexual knowledge given by Masters and Johnson? Then this summarized data can be printed out for aid in giving a verbal report or saved to a text file which can be further expanded into a complete written report. Grades 2.51 Singh, Manu $10 allows students to keep track of all the courses that they have taken, their course numbers, and their grades, including Grade Point Average. Guitar Chord Dictionary 1.0 (GCHORD) Web-Man $10 is a hypertext reference of commonly used guitar chords. Five chords are available in each of the 12 keys. These are the major, seventh, minor, minor seventh, and major 7th. Each chord is listed in three different positions on the fingerboard. A total of 60 chords are included. Chords may be marked and later played back in sequence. IQ-Bild is an IQ Builder which drills on analogies, antonyms and synonyms. While this won't really make you any "smarter", it will give you practice on the types of questions asked on IQ tests. Jem Logo 1.10 Moriartey, James $20 is a very simple programming language that teaches children the logic associated with a computer and how to combine commands to carry out complex tasks. Learnit will help memorize things. Memory teaches you how to improve your memory. Phone Memory 1.1 (PHONEMM) Pinnacle Software $0 is a program that helps you remember telephone numbers by creating mnemonics. Actually, the techniques described in the documentation can be used to remember all kinds of numbers. Research Planner PC 1.1 (RESPLAN) Hatch, Laurence C. $79 produces detailed research proposals for scientists, graduate students, and other researchers. Over 60 major topics and ideas are presented. Schedule Maker 2.4 (SCH-MKR) Caballero, Mallku $? helps students schedule classes during registration. Given a list of classes, sections, and times, this program finds all the schedules without time conflicts. It will also produce neat outputs of these schedules. The first exercise plays a note and you must identify it (as C, F#, etc). The second exercise drills you on intervals. The program has a very attractive EGA/VGA interface and supports Sound Blaster and Ad Lib compatible sound cards. Melissa's Music Flashcards 3.0 (MMF) Fischer Grafix & Software ASP $21 provides a colorful, interactive environment for children to learn the notes and keys of the music staff. It allows you to choose the clef and the number of sharps or flats in the key signature to be displayed at random on the staff. You can either guess at the note or have it displayed as a key on the keyboard. Correct guesses produce a happy, winking note while wrong guesses produce a tearful one. EGA and a mouse are required. Shoot-the-Notes 1.0 (SHTNOTE) Dworsky, R.J. $25 is a game for learning musical notes. It can be set for beginning to advanced levels. The program displays a staff with notes on it and tells you a note to shoot. You have a limited time (in the non-beginner levels) to aim at and shoot the correct note. Misses reduce your playing time. The program, written by a music teacher, looks like an excellent learning tool. Requires 640K RAM and VGA. #3061 Morse Code ---------------- The Code Machine 3.0 (TCM) Wilson, Lloyd J. $0 is a ham radio program created to key radio transmitters and offer Morse code practice. It transmits code at any speed from 1 to 100 words per minute. Features include 1000 character type-ahead buffer, 22 single key messages of up to 255 characters each, user modifiable transmission signals, and versatile practice programs. Morse Code Converter 1.0 (MORSECC) Risenhoover, Paul $10 will convert a text file to Morse code through the PC's speaker. It also displays the text as it goes, making this an excellent tool for learning and practicing Morse code. The transmission rate and pitch are user selectable. Morse Code Practice (MCP) Adkins, Jerry $0 is an excellent program for learning and practicing Morse Code. You can type in letters or words on your keyboard, and it will translate them to code. It can also read text files, and play them back in code. Other features include a random code generator, and a quiz section. West Consulting ASP $34 #7167/1684 [2 disks] is a three-disk set containing the following: Think Thunder! and Unleash Your Creativity (Thomas A. Easton) is an on-disk book explaining what creativity is and how to use it. Thunder Thought (Thomas A. Easton and R. K. West) is computer-aided brainstorming, and it facilitates the creative process by automating its initial stages. It will help you come up with novel combinations of words, images, or ideas. Versifier (R. K. West), combines words and phrases from a vocabulary you supply into different kinds of poems, which you can then save and edit. Although the program follows a few grammatical rules and has a number of predefined structures for the poems, the choice of specific structure and the selection of vocabulary are random. This enables the program to put ideas together in ways you might not have thought of consciously, yet they are still your own ideas, expressed in your own words. DBSteel Education #7168/077 [5 disks] is a program that will help prepare students for the S.A.T.'s. Behavior Evolution Simulations and Tutorials Psytek Services $30 #7573/3811 [2 disks] contains some fascinating information about human behavior. These simulations vividly demonstrate cumulative selection, evolutionary stable strategies, population dynamics, genetic evolution, and other theories. A construction kit is provided to allow students, teachers, and researchers to develop their own graphical simulations of behavioral evolutionary stable strategies (ESS's) within a genetically unchanging population. Requires 640K. Bicycle Tune-Up and Repair Napier, Jeff and Another Company $10 #3088 will teach you all about tuning up any bicycle including cruisers, BMX, road and mountain bikes. There are lessons on wheel alignment, flat tire repair, bearing adjustments and more. Build-A-Fish Virginia Marine Science Museum $20 #3089 allows you to choose physical characteristics of a fish, which will then be displayed on screen, along with a short description. Up to 67 different types of fish can be displayed. The files unarchives to over 1.2 meg of disk space. CGA compatible video is required. The program uses a timed display, which will probably be too slow for you. Run TIMEOUT and enter a large number to slow it down. We used 10,000 for a 286-10. This program is an interactive exhibit used on the floor of the Virginia Marine Science Museum. CEES Kids `R' Us $15 #4081 provides comprehensive evaluations of educational software. It gives a quantitative rating assessing ten different criteria including documentation, user-friendliness, motivational value, sound/music, age suitability, and more. Among the 12 categories are Language, Math, Social Science, Craft/Music/Home, and Data Processing, along with some assorted Games and Utilities. Over 800K of disk space is required. College Bound Advisor 1.0 The College Bound Advisory Service $49 #20058 [2 disks] will help students prepare for college. It covers financial aid, family contribution, the Pell grant, loan analysis, military options, state agencies, college cost comparison, information requests, and scholarships. It contains a database of sources of information about many college related topics, a bibliography of books on college related topics, and a glossary college related terms. Requires 512K and a hard disk. College Probe Carolina Programs $35 #3993 lets you review information about U.S. colleges and universities. The program lists more than 1500 accredited four-year schools. You can search by a variety of criteria including SAT/ACT scores, tuition costs, size of enrollment, handicap access, male/female ratio, and more. A hard disk is required. ET-CAI 1.24 [ET_CAI] (11-93 CD) Ormon, Charlie E. $45 #20141 [2 disks] is a tutorial about electronics for high school and college levels. Topics include AC/DC circuits, digital circuits, and semi conductors. Requires 512K and hard disk. VGA Dinosaur Database Owens, Tony L. $10 #2799 is an entertaining game that teaches about dinosaurs. The program tells you the common and scientific names of a dinosaur, and lists other dinos in the same family. A world map graphically displays habitats, and the time period they lived in. Other options include printing, changing screen colors, and painting the dinos. Also on the disk is a Concentration-type game. Requires VGA and a high density floppy or hard disk. DC Circuit Analysis 1.2 Tanzella, Arthur ASP $15 #4412 (10-93 CD) teaches the concepts of DC circuits in general and digital computer circuits in particular. It creates and evaluates Direct Current circuits and digital computer circuits on screen. Eight sample circuits are provided. The documentation may be a helpful tutorial about semiconductors, logic and digital computer circuits. Mouse support is included. Requires EGA/VGA color monitor and 325K RAM. DC1 Crescent Multimedia Systems $42 #20318/12374 [2 disks] (12-93 CD) is an introduction to DC electronics. It covers basic atomic makeup of the atom, and its function in the generation of electrical voltage and current. Concepts like electrostatic effects, polarity, current flow, ions, conductors and insulators are covered in depth. Basic batteries and voltage sources are also discussed. Requires VGA. Knowledge Bowl Trivia Electronic Learning Enterprises $31-$41 #2045 is a colorful knowledge trivia program to make learning fun. There is a Game Mode for competition among up to 4 players and a Quiz Mode for individual study. These are TOUGH questions. We gave up after our percentage of correct answers dropped below 20%. CNA Review 3.0 [CNAV3U] Small, Frederick ASP $29 #7663/3730 (12-93 CD) will test your knowledge as a certified nursing assistant. EMS Review CalMark $50 #7663/2875 assists EMS (Emergency Medical Services) workers in reviewing material that relates to their level of certification and preparing for advanced certification. This is a very thorough program with 24 categories covering everything from acid-based balance through trauma. LVN Vocational Nurse Review 2.1 [LVNV3U] Small, Frederick ASP $38 #7663/3731 (12-93 CD) will test your abilities as a vocational nurse. It provides an evaluation of your knowledge or hematology, CPR, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, endocrine system and metabolism, and orthopedic nursing. Health field employers could use this to screen job applicants. BrainScape Purdue Research Foundation $0 #7664/1486 is an adventure game that gives you the opportunity of learning neuroanatomy by wandering around inside of your brain. There are 50 locations available for exploration, including the ventricular system, limbic system, sensory and motor systems, and cortical and brainstem regions. There are also treasures to be found, problems to be overcome, and a few denizens of the brain to be met. Skull Cogent Software, Ltd. $0 #7664/1503 is a HyperText application about the anatomy of the skull which will display several digitized EGA views of the skull. You can point to areas of the skull in the pictures and get more information in a HyperText format. Nervous System Construction Kit Williams, Pat and Greg $0 #7664/2876 is designed for user experimentation with artificial neural networks. Based on a computer simulation of a cockroach by a Dr. Beer, the bug in this program has about 80 neurons with about 150 connections and 500 user-settable parameters. The networks are designed to perform specific functions with the context of an organism's ecological niche. Using the data files included, the bug will wander around exploring, following walls, avoiding barricades, and seeking out food when its energy level falls. C source code is included, and EGA is required. Mt. St. Helens Simulation Greaney, Ed $0 #7631/3996 [4 disks] is an outstanding presentation of the Mount Saint Helens eruption of 1980. The story of the eruption is told in compelling style. You are shown impressive digitized color photos (VGA required) of the mountain and surrounding areas before, during and after the eruption. The presentation ends with a deadly game in which you are in the area when a volcano erupts. You must make the right decisions at every turn about how to get out alive, or you instantly fall victim to burning ashes or toxic gases. A hard disk is required. Metric Tutor [METRIC] (11-93 CD) New Software Evaluation $8 #12588 is a tutorial on linear measure, weight and volume. This program includes basic measure concepts, an introduction to the metric system, a course on linear measure with text and graphics, a test for linear measure, a liquid and volume measure tutorial, a review of Celsius and Fahrenheit basics, and an introduction to temperature measure. Metric tables and abbreviations are included. Requires hard disk, VGA. Note by Note Applied MicroSystems, Inc. $70 #3658 is an excellent teaching aid for musical note recognition. As you click on a graphical representation of either guitar strings or piano keys, the note is displayed on a staff. The letter equivalent of the note is also displayed, and the corresponding tone is sounded. In the drill mode, a note is displayed on the staff and you must find the note on the keyboard or guitar. The beautifully done interface requires VGA and a mouse. 512K free RAM is also required, and a hard disk is recommended. Support is provided for the Sound Blaster card. PC-Piano Teacher [PCPT] Data Assist, Inc. $29 #12534 (10-93 CD) is an instruction package for teaching music. By using colorful graphic screens, the student is presented with a series of questions designed to test their understanding of musical notes and scales supplementing their music lessons. NTSC ItWorks $25 #4413 is a tutorial on video graphics and multimedia. It can also be used as a reference for TV station engineers. Features include diagrams of video signal, measurements, and references; video phase delay calculator for studio genlock timing; glossary of video terms and abbreviations; database of USA TV channels; test pattern examples and how-to guides for measurements that can be done using these patterns; and extensive video formats section with theory, color examples, and references for most video formats used around the world. Requires 512K RAM, DOS 3.0+ and a hard disk or high density floppy. Oxy-Acetylene Welding Tutorial Napier, Jeff and Another Company $10 #7574/3091 teaches gas welding from beginning to advanced, including cutting and welding aluminum. PC-AC Information System PMA Technology Group $65 #7574/3813 [2 disks] is a training course in automotive air conditioning. It includes competency tests, a service manual, reference materials, and electronic catalog samples. Requires a hard disk. PC-Tech: Intro. to Electrical/Electronics PMA Technology Group $23 #3997 is an introductory tutorial covering basic electrical/electronic terms, concepts, and diagnostics. It includes quizzes and a final exam, and is targeted at non-technical personnel and others with no background in the subject. The program has an automotive slant, but is applicable to most systems. 500K of disk space required. Parables & Parabolas Niche Software ASP $10-$100 #4639 is an interactive lesson in moral sensitivity aimed at teenagers. It asks several confidential questions involving teen-oriented situations, then provides recommended parables derived from authors such as Kafka, Casteneda, and Kierkegaard. Requires at least a 286 machine with VGA, and DOS 3.3+. A hard disk is recommended. Piano Tuning Hoose, Ron Van $0 #3814 is a complete course in professional piano tuning. It contains all the information you need to tune your own piano or tune for profit. It was written by a professional tuner/technician with over 30 years experience. Quizzle 1.0 PractiComp $15 #4666 is an entertaining and educational quiz game. It can be played alone or against an opponent. A Quizzle screen consists of sixteen squares. Points are awarded based on the number of questions needed to answer a square correctly. Study sheets can be printed for each player. Categories include Famous Quotations, Inventors and Inventions, Women of the Bible, the Books of the Bible, U.S. States and Capitals, and Third Grade Vocabulary. Requires 512K RAM, and two floppies or a hard drive. San Mateo Education #7169/754 [2 disks] is a nice little collection of educational games and puzzles for teenagers and up. StoryMaker 2.0 [STORYMK] Elson Embry $23 #12208 (12-93 CD) lets you create talking story books with animation, music and sound effects. It provides a paint module for scenery background, shape editor for animation, melody editor with animated piano for music, and a text editor for creating text-to-speech. It accepts CMF and VOC files. Requires 512K, EGA/VGA, hard drive and a mouse. Teacher Edwards, Larry ASP $15 #3633 is a self teaching program including lessons for Spelling, Antonyms, Synonym, Math, History, and Geography. Also included are categories in Vocabulary study, Definitions, Prefixes and Suffixes. The program is designed to aid in preparing for the S.A.T. Test Shipley, William $10 #1572 is intended to be a study aid, particularly for students who have a problem studying on their own. Once the questions and answers are entered, the computer can provide the student with a structured approach to learning the given set of facts. Typically, the student could first take a multiple choice test, which is relatively easy. Next the question and answer test could be taken, followed by additional question and answer tests on incorrect responses until all answers have been given correctly. Morse Practice Jones, Larry S. $0 #7170/656 allows you to practice Morse Code. Super Morse Murrah, M. Lee $10 #7170/1288 is a full-featured program which provides several modes of learning and practicing the Morse code. PSpice MicroSim Corp. $0 #7620/1133 [3 disks] Do you know what PSPICE is? If so then you might be interested to know that this is a classroom version of it that can be used at no charge. Beyond that, there is no documentation on the disks. Wolfie's Music Games 1.1 Dawson, Paul T. $10 #4789 is a collection of 10 games designed to teach children music notes. The games teach relationships between the notes on the staff, note letters, and piano keys. The games are challenging enough for teenagers, but probably can be played by young children as well. Requires EGA/VGA and 640K. ]]]]]
